NOTE: Reading this manual is not necessary to use IGOSUP.
This information would be more useful for someone who wanted
to examine other game records using GOVIEW. The commentary
in IGOSUP gives you all the instruction you need.
To start IGOSUP, type the command IGOSUP.
GoView User Guide
GoView is an easy-to-use tool for playing back Go games.
Your computer is an excellent platform for studying your
own or others' games, and GoView provides the interface to
those games.
GoView's menus allow you easy use of all of the program's capabilities.
They can be accessed from the keyboard, but we highly recommend a mouse
for most effective use.
Each recorded game is stored as a single file on your disk.
It is recorded in a standard format so that other applications
can open and read it. For instance, the Many Faces of GO, a
Go-playing program, will read and write game records in this format.
Since the file is stored in ASCII, you can open it using a standard
text editor and make changes to it. The format is designed to be
human-readable. Be careful though--GoView may not be able to read
the file if you make changes outside of the text commentary.
If you find that you want to record and edit games in addition
to viewing them, those capabilities are available in the GoScribe
program or version 9 of the Deluxe module of The Many Faces of GO.
Getting Started
If you are using GoView with a hard disk:
- Put your program disk in drive A:
- Make a directory on your hard disk by typing:
MD \GOVIEW
CD \GOVIEW
- Copy the disk by typing:
COPY A:*.*,C:
- Type GOVIEW to start the program.
If you are running from a floppy drive:
- Make a backup of your program disk and put the original
in a safe place.
- Put the copy in the default drive
- Type GOVIEW to start the program.
Viewing Pre-recorded Games
When GoView is running, you will see a Go board with 4 windows to
the right of it. Below these windows you will also see a help line.
You can select any visible command by moving the mouse cursor to it
and clicking. Alternately, you can type the command abbreviation
(shown in upper case to the left of the command).
To view a recorded game, you must first load it into memory.
Select the FILES command. A special set of file manipulation
windows will appear. When no game is in memory, FILES will
automatically invoke the LOAD command and show a directory of
files on the disk. Type in or use the mouse to pick the file
you want to view. (If no files appear, you may need to use
the PATH command to reset the default path. Use the PATH command
to specify both the drive and directory you want to read.
The EXTENSION command lets you specify a default file extension,
normally .GO. If you are running from a floppy, check to make
sure you have inserted the data disk you want to read from.
You can also enter the filename directly on the command line,
either without a path--it will use the default path--or explicitly
with a path.
(For example, if you want to view a game in Go World on Disk #58
on your floppy drive A:
insert the game disk in A
click on or type FI
enter path A:\meijin.13
click on or type LO
The games from the 13th Meijin Tournament should appear in the
directory window.)
Select the VIEW command to view the file you have just loaded.
Then select the game control commands with the mouse or the cursor
controls to move through the game. Their effects are as follows:
Home- return to the beginning of the game (or variation).
Up arrow- back up 1 play.
PgUp- back up 10 plays.
Left arrow (<var)- back up to the previous variation.
Game- leave the variation you are in and return to the
main game sequence.
Right arrow (var>)- Advance to the next variation.
End- advance to the end of the game (or variation).
Down arrow- advance 1 move.
PgDn- advance 10 plays.
When you reach a move that has a comment, several other commands will
appear in the window, and text will normally appear in the third window.
Comment- display/hide the commentary.
- - back up to the previous page of commentary
(shown only if there is a preceding page).
+ - scroll ahead to the next page of commentary
(shown only if there is a next page).
Automatic Problems
You can guess the next play in the game by clicking on an open point.
If this is the correct move, the stone will appear. If not, you will
hear a tone, but the board will not change. You may continue guessing
moves or just use the down arrow to show what the actual play was.
Alternate Game Sequences
Sometimes games will have alternative lines of play recorded in them
(variations), usually to illustrate the results if the players had
chosen a different pattern or had made a mistake. When you reach a
move that has variations, a letter will appear on the spot of each
alternate play. To view one of these alternate lines, click on the
letter, or select the right or left arrow key.
